The cast iron structure was built in 1890 and stands 10 metres tall. It is equipped with a modern optic which flashes white every 2.5 seconds.
The lighthouse is located on the west breakwater at Barry, about 9 miles southwest of Cardiff. Visible are the remains of the rail line which in the early 20th century brought coal to the waiting ships at a rate that made Barry one of the biggest fuel exporting ports in the kingdom.
