A Note from the Artist

The South Bishop Lighthouse is located on South Bishop Island (also known as Emsger), a small rock approximately 8 km west of St David’s Head in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

Designed by James Walker, South Bishop Lighthouse was built by Trinity House in 1839 as a guide and hazard warning to vessels along the Pembrokeshire coastline. The lighthouse acts primarily as a waymark for vessels navigating offshore and secondly to assist vessels navigating around the Bishops and Clerks.

The lighthouse was converted to electric operation in 1959, and in 1971 a helipad was constructed at the site. Finally, the lighthouse was automated and de-manned in 1983.
