The East Usk Lighthouse was constructed in 1893 by Trinity House and entered service in June that year. It exhibits the remaining operational light of the two lighthouses that once marked the entrance to the River Usk.
The lighthouse Displays a Port Entry Light consisting of occulting Red, White and Green light sectors that guide shipping into the entrance of the Newport dredged channel. It is a vital navigational aid for ships approaching Newport and for over 100 years has played a vital role in marine safety and the economic prosperity of Newport Docks.
The lighthouse is situated within the Newport Wetlands and nature reserve where cetti’s warblers and bearded tits can be seen and heard in the reedbeds, while ducks, geese and swans visit the reserve in large numbers during the winter.
