A Bit of History

Cape Henry Lighthouse, located at the southern entrance of Chesapeake Bay in Virginia Beach, is a historic landmark with a rich maritime history. The original lighthouse, built in 1792, was the first federally funded lighthouse in the United States. The current structure, built in 1881, stands 164 feet tall and serves as an iconic symbol of maritime navigation. Offering panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay, Cape Henry Lighthouse continues to guide ships entering the bay, preserving its historical significance and attracting visitors interested in the region’s maritime heritage.
