A Bit of History

The Lighthouse on Turtle Rock was built in 1887 as an aid to traffic on the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Constructed on a rocky protrusion on the east bank of the river and just west of Boathouse Row, the lighthouse marked a bend in the river and an adjacent dam that stretched more than 1,200 feet across the river incorporating locks and a canal to help traffic navigate upstream and prevent the brackish water of the tidal reach from going any further upriver. The lighthouse has a hexagonal lantern room with an octagonal walkway. The lighthouse was incorporated into the building of the Sedgeley Clubs boathouse when the latter was built in 1902.
