A Bit of History

Burnt Coat Harbor Lighthouse, situated on Hockamock Head in Swans Island, Maine, has safeguarded sailors since 1872. Named for the distinctive reddish-brown color of the exposed cliffs, this picturesque light station guides vessels through the entrance to Burnt Coat Harbor. The tower, attached to a Victorian-style keeper’s dwelling, stands as a beacon of maritime history. Though automated in 1976, the lighthouse remains a vital part of the island’s identity and a captivating symbol of coastal navigation.
