A Bit of History

Tybee Island Light Station, situated on the northeastern tip of Tybee Island near Savannah, Georgia, is one of the state’s oldest and most iconic lighthouses. Dating back to 1736, the original structure was replaced by the current brick tower in 1773. Standing at 144 feet, Tybee Island Lighthouse has played a crucial role in guiding ships safely through the mouth of the Savannah River and the Atlantic Ocean. The distinctive black-and-white tower is complemented by a historic lighthouse keeper’s cottage and other auxiliary buildings. Open to the public, the Tybee Island Light Station provides visitors with panoramic views of the coast and insights into Georgia’s maritime history.
