Scurdie Ness Lighthouse was built in 1870 by David & Thomas Stevenson. and that March was illuminated for the first time.
Originally the light character was fixed white but in 1907 was changed to isophase white 60 seconds (i.e, light 30 seconds, eclipse 30 seconds). The light currently flashes (3) white every 20 seconds and has a range of 23 nautical miles.
During WWII the keepers at Scurdie Ness were lambasted by the RAF for “lighting up”, (under orders from the Admiralty) and therefore acting as a beacon for German bombers. In fact, the keepers were as aware as anyone else of the need for the blackout and went so far as to paint the tower black so it wouldn’t act as a daymare for enemy vessels.
Scurdie Ness was converted to automatic operation in 1987.
