A Note from the Artist

Between 1572 and 1890, Newhaven was a major port for landing oysters. It also played a role in the whaling industry, recalled in the name “Whale Brae” at the northmost end of Newhaven Road.

The lighthouse built at the harbour entrance in 1869 is a local landmark. The harbour has since been dwarfed by the enlarged Leith Harbour and the light emitted by the lighthouse being no longer of any navigational use, was decommissioned.

Happily Newhaven harbour light has been illuminated once again, but this time it is for purely decorative purposes and is not intended to help ships navigate. With its lights set on a “rainbow wheel”, changing colour throughout the night the harbour has regained a little of its past swagger.
