Neist Point isThe Isle of Ornsay lighthouse was built in 1857 by Thomas and David Stevenson. It is a masonry tower with a gallery, lantern and keeper’s house. The light entered service on 10 November 1857 with a new “condensing” apparatus by which the light, shown in different directions, varied in strength according to the distance from which it was required to be seen. Ornsay was automated in 1962.
This site has battery backup for fourteen days operation of the emergency light.
The light is currently un-monitored and relies on the observer to report any problems to the Northern Lighthouse Board.
The light was modernised in 1988 when mains power was installed to replace the gas system.
The old keepers accommodation is now operated as the luxurious self catering Eilean Sionnach (island of the fox) Lighthouse cottage.
