Situated an hours drive from Shetland’s capital town Lerwick, Esha Ness lighthouse is on the North West coast of mainland Shetland. There are no visible neighbours and the warm cosy feel inside the lighthouse on a wild and stormy night is an experience never to be forgotten.
Eshaness Lighthouse is perched atop some of the most dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery just an hours drive from Shetland’s capital town Lerwick.
The lighthouse has a tapering, square tower 12 metres high and was built by David Alan Stevenson, one of the famous ‘lighthouse’ Stevensons, between 1925 and 1929. It was built from concrete because of the unsuitability of local stone.
It flashes white every 12 seconds and has a nominal range of 46 km. The light was automated in 1974 and the former lighthouse keepers’ housing is now holiday accommodation. It is owned by the Shetland Amenity Trust. The area is one of Shetland’s top attractions for visitors and locals alike with breath taking open views in every direction and the very best of Shetland scenery and wildlife.
