Built on a tidal rock, Haulbowline has the classic bell shape to dissipate and break up waves crashing around its base. The Romeo and Juliet balcony halfway up was actually designed to carry a supplementary half tide light rather than for any serenading by the keeper’s wives.
It was originally painted white, but was restored to its natural colour seventy years ago.
