Running between Burtonport on the mainland and Arranmore island is a stretch of water known as the Aran Roads. At its Northern end is Ballagh Rock, the largest of a group known as the Blackrocks. The present structure dates back to 1875, when it was erected as a day marker. Almost 100 years passed before it was eventually fitted with a light in 1982.
