Coquet lighthouse, a white square tower of sandstone, with walls more than one metre thick and surmounted by a turreted parapet was designed by the Trinity House engineer James Walker.
The structure is built on the remains of the Benedictine monastery that occupied the island until the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII and the light is housed in a circular lantern room complete with a conical roof and domed ventilator.
The first keeper appointed to Coquet Lighthouse was William Darling, elder brother of famed rescue heroine Grace Darling. He was the second of her brothers to become a Trinity House lighthouse keeper.
