Whitby Lighthouse is located on Ling Hill, on the coast to the south-east of Whitby, beyond Saltwick Bay. To distinguish it from the two lighthouses in Whitby itself it is sometimes known as Whitby High lighthouse.
The Lighthouse was built by Trinity House in 1858, originally one of a pair of leading lights marking nearby Whitby Rock. Aligned north-south and showing fixed lights over Whitby Rock, the station was altered in 1890 when a more efficient light was installed in the smaller tower and the other was closed down.
Whitby Lighthouse was automated in 1992.
The lighthouse is now monitored and controlled from Trinity House’s Planning Centre in Harwich, Essex.
