Winterton

A magical converted 18th-century lighthouse located on the edge of the picturesque village of Winterton-on-Sea, Norfolk.

A building with a rich history, the lighthouse was mentioned in Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and used as a lookout tower during World War II. The original tower has now been extended at ground level, with a simple glass and timber structure (the ‘Garden Room’), which opens onto a cedar deck and garden designed by RHS Chelsea Gold-medal winner Christopher Moss.

Winterton Lighthouse is located in Winterton-on-Sea, Norfolk. In 1845 Winterton Ness was described as being ‘well known to the mariner as the most fatal headland between Scotland and London’. As well as marking the headland, the lighthouse was intended to help guide vessels into the Cockle Gat, which provided the northern entry into the safe water of Yarmouth Roads. 

The present lighthouse dates from the mid-1860s; it was decommissioned in 1921. The lighthouse was mentioned in Daniel Defoe’s novel Robinson Crusoe and was used as a lookout tower during World War II. Winterton Lighthouse is now available as an unusual and magical holiday rental destination.
