A Note from the Artist

Though Maryport was reported to have a lighthouse as early as 1796, it was described by visiting Scottish engineer Robert Stevenson as little more than an oil lamp with two reflectors. The shipping merchants had to wait until 1846 when the new pier and its lighthouse were completed following an act of parliament. The octagonal metal plinth on a stone base stands at 11 metres tall and by 1858 had a range of 22km.
1961 saw Trinity House take charge of the light, but by 1995 it was decided to replace the light with an aluminium tower situated on the new pier extension. This structure displays a flashing white light for 11km out to sea.
