Dungeness, at the southernmost point of Kent and is one of the largest expanses of shingle in Europe. There have been eight lighthouses built at Dungeness- five high and three low. The current tower is the fifth of the “High“ lighthouses.
For the new tower at Dungeness an array of sixty such emitters were incorporated into the design of the lighthouse tower and remained in use until the year 2000, when they were replaced by an electronic signal installed at the base of the tower.
Dungeness Lighthouse was converted to automatic operation in 1991. The lighthouse is now monitored and controlled from Trinity House’s Planning Centre in Harwich, Essex.
