Anvil Point Lighthouse was built in 1881.
The lighthouse’s location gives a clear line to the west from Portland Bill towards Poole Harbour.
To the east, Anvil Point guides vessels away from the treacherous Christchurch Ledge shepherding traffic into the Solent and marking the hazards of St Aldhelm’s Head and Durlston Head.
Anvil Point Lighthouse was automated in 1991. The lighthouse is now monitored and controlled from Trinity House’s Planning Centre in Harwich, Essex.
