A Note from the Artist

Eddystone Lighthouse perches precariously on the Eddystone Rocks, about 14 Km south of Cornwall’s Rame Head, slap bang in the middle of the English Channel’s shipping lanes.

The present tower is the 4th to protect these waters and dates from 1882, though there has been a light here since 1698.

This current structure was designed by James Douglas. Complete new foundations had to be painstakingly prepared in the 4-hour window between ebb and flood tide. Bit by bit the tower rose and within three years the new 49 metre tower was complete.

First lit in 1882, it was automated in 1982 two years after the helipad was constructed.
