A Note from the Artist

At the entrance to Falmouth harbour and the Carrick Roads, one of the largest natural harbours in the world, the St Anthony lighthouse guides traffic past the offshore Manacles Rocks and the Black Rock which is sat square in the middle of the channel into the harbour.

The lighthouse was designed by James Walker and built in 1835 by Olver of Falmouth, for Trinity House and the original light came from eight Argand oil lamps mounted on a revolving frame.

During the 1980’s the Lighthouse became widely recognised as it featured in the opening credits and many scenes of the 1980s Jim Henson’s children’s TV programme ‘Fraggle Rock’.

Today the light is automated, flashing every 15 seconds, with a red sector for The Manacles and a range of 22 miles. The fog horn blasts once every 30 seconds.
