England & Wales Harbours & Breakwaters

Included in this section are the (not always) minor lights of harbours and estuaries. While their bigger siblings get most of the glory, these sentinels and leading lights are crucial to the safe passage of waterborne trade at the entrance to ports and working waterways. Mostly built during the golden age of lighthouse construction, they are handsome additions to our built maritime heritage, apart from being situated in some spectacular locations. I’ve also included some structures that have put their working days behind them. Though their lights have dimmed, they continue to illuminate and inspire dreams of travel and far flung shores. Long may their spirit continue to shine.
